The Talisman is Sir Walter Scott's tale about the Crusades, a story of chivalry, of violence, of virtue, romance, and deceit. The warlike character of wild and generous Richard I, who was a model of chivalry with all his advantages and disadvantages, was opposed to that of Saladin, who demonstrated all the cruelty and violence of an Eastern sultan. Every character claimed to be superior to the other in chivalry, bravery, and generosity.
