Oseki, a young woman, is married to a wealthy official at the insistence of her family. But her married life is full of misery and humiliation: her husband treats her with contempt, and she feels lonely and depressed in the marriage. At one point, her father, seeing how much she is suffering, suggests that she return home and get a divorce. However, Oseki realises that such a move would put her family in a difficult social situation and deprive them of stability, so she is faced with a moral dilemma: stay with her husband for the good of the family or follow her own desires and pursue personal freedom.
