"The Life of a Useless Man" is a story by Maxim Gorky, published in 1908. The main character, Yevsey Klimkov, gets a job in a bookstore. Its owner sells forbidden literature and then turns it over to the police. So Yevsey ends up in the tsarist police, which makes him their spy.
